A5 paper size

A5 measures 148 × 210 mm — exactly half of A4. It is the standard size for notepads, paperback interiors, half-page flyers and small zines. Because the proportions match A4, you can print two A5 pages onto a single A4 sheet without distortion.

Exact dimensions

Pixel values below assume the page is rendered at the listed DPI. For commercial print, 300 DPI is the usual target. For on-screen reading and digital booklets, 96 or 144 DPI is fine.

Printing two-up on A4

The most efficient way to produce A5 on a home printer is to lay out two A5 pages side by side on a single A4 sheet (in landscape), print, then cut along the centre. Most PDF readers and office suites offer this as a built-in "2 pages per sheet" or "booklet" option. A guillotine or sharp craft knife with a metal ruler gives the cleanest edge.

A5 in the A-series

Every step in the ISO A-series halves the area of the previous one. A4 folded in half gives A5; A5 folded gives A6 (105 × 148 mm). Because each size shares the 1 : √2 ratio, designs scale between them without leaving empty borders.

Frequently asked questions

What are the exact dimensions of A5?

A5 is 148 × 210 millimetres, which is 14.8 × 21.0 centimetres, or approximately 5.83 × 8.27 inches.

Is A5 half of A4?

Yes. A5 is exactly half the area of A4, cut along its long edge. Two A5 sheets placed side by side make one A4 sheet, and they share the same 1 : √2 aspect ratio.

What is A5 typically used for?

A5 is a popular size for notepads, paperback book interiors, half-page flyers, event programmes, zines, planner inserts and small folded leaflets. It is large enough to write on comfortably but small enough to slip into a bag.

How many pixels is A5 at 300 DPI?

At 300 DPI, A5 is 1748 × 2480 pixels. At 150 DPI (a lower print resolution often used for proofs and large fills) it is 874 × 1240 pixels.

Can I print A5 on a normal home printer?

Yes. Most home printers can print A5 by selecting it in the print dialog, or by printing two A5 pages onto a single A4 sheet using the printer's "2 pages per sheet" option and cutting the sheet in half.
